Small-Batch vs. Single Barrel: A Quick Guide

These two phrases show up on labels constantly, and unlike bourbon itself, neither is strictly regulated. But they do tell you something useful.

Single barrel means exactly that: the bottle was filled from one individual barrel, not blended with others. Because every barrel ages a little differently, single barrels can vary — part of the fun is tasting that variation.

Small batch means the bourbon was blended from a relatively small number of hand-selected barrels to achieve a consistent, intentional flavor. The distiller is acting like a conductor, balancing barrels to hit a target profile.

Neither is better — they are different philosophies. Single barrel celebrates individuality; small batch celebrates craft and consistency.
