Bourbon 101
How to Taste Bourbon Like a Pro

1. Look. Tilt the glass and note the color — deeper amber often means more time in the barrel.
2. Nose. Hold the glass a few inches away and breathe gently with your mouth slightly open. Look for vanilla, caramel, oak, baking spice, and fruit.
3. Sip. Take a small sip and let it coat your tongue before swallowing. Notice the balance of sweet, spicy, and bitter.
4. Finish. Pay attention to the flavors that linger. A long, warming finish is the mark of a well-made bourbon.
Add a few drops of water if the alcohol is overwhelming — it opens up the aromas. There are no wrong answers; the goal is simply to enjoy what is in your glass.
